Welcome to The Morphology Kit® Latin Progression, a dynamic program designed to empower students by exploring Latin morphemes—the building blocks of many English words. Developed by Mary McFarlin, M.A., C-SLDS Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist, this comprehensive course focuses on the most common Latin morphemes. At least 60% of words encountered in academic texts after grade 3 are comprised of Latin morphemes.

Why Morphology Matters

Understanding the structure of words is crucial for literacy development. Morphology—the study of morphemes—helps students decode complex words, expand their vocabulary, and improve their spelling skills. By learning morphemes, students can simplify the complexity of words, making an 8-syllable word not necessarily more complicated than a 3-syllable word.

Program Structure

The Morphology Kit® Latin Progression is structured around individual morpheme lessons, each featuring a Core Lesson and a set of engaging activities.

Core Lesson

Each Core Lesson focuses on a single Latin morpheme, such as the prefix “RE-” (as in repeat).

Engaging Activities

A variety of activities designed to reinforce understanding and application of the morpheme, including:

  • Constructor/Deconstructor: Students create and break down words from morphemes.
  • Word Builder: Supports an understanding of word structure, spelling and how words are related to one another.
  • Morph Match: Matching words to definitions and related words.
  • Fill-in-the-Morph: Completing sentences and paragraphs with appropriate morphemes.
USED WITH THE GUIDED LESSONS
In the videos, Mary McFarlin, the Guided Lessons instructor, walks the student through each printed Core Lesson.
Afterward, you (the instructor or parent) chooses the activities that best support review and practice, and checks the work with the Answer Key.
